Beat the Heat: Planning Your 2024 Summer Team Building Events

Beat the Heat: Planning Your 2024 Summer Team Building Events

As we approach the summer of 2024, it’s time to start thinking about your end-of-year team building events and Christmas celebrations. With forecasts suggesting this summer could be hotter than previous years, it’s crucial to plan activities that keep your team comfortable, engaged, and energized.

The Heat is On: Summer 2024 Outlook

Recent climate predictions indicate that Australia’s summer 2024-2025 is likely to be warmer than average across most of the country. While La Niña conditions may develop and potentially moderate extreme heat in some areas, overall temperatures are expected to be above the long-term average.

Outdoor Events

Given these predictions, traditional outdoor team building activities might pose challenges. Beach outings or events in areas with limited shade could expose your team to excessive heat, potentially impacting their enjoyment and well-being. The ultimate goal of any team event is to ensure everyone has fun. Baking them on hot sand for a couple hours, might not be that much fun. However, this doesn’t mean you have to completely abandon outdoor plans – it just requires more strategic thinking.

Indoor Events: Cool, Fun, Comfortable, and Creative

Considering the forecasted heat, indoor team building activities are becoming an increasingly attractive option. Not only do they provide a comfortable, climate-controlled environment, but they also offer a wide range of exciting possibilities for team bonding and skill development. By being indoors, you’re removing the risk of people being too hot, sunburns and tiering too early for the heat. Indoor events also provide you with the confidence of knowing regardless of weather conditions, your event won’t be impacted; there is a lot of comfort to be gained by reducing pre-event stress.

At Premier Team Building, we specialize in creating amazing, fun team events, be it indoor or outdoors, that will leave your team talking long after the event is over.

  1. LEGO Challenges – Premier Team Building LEGO events are a hit year round. Be it a competitive building challenge or a collaborative event. These events will leave a smile on your team’s face
  2. Let’s Van Gogh Painting – This painting team activity has your team working in pairs to coach each other on what to paint. This isn’t a basic paint by numbers style event, this challenge is collaborative, fun, social and pairs lovely with a regional Rose if you were so inclined to do.
  3. Wings Of Collaboration – Working in teams you’ll need to design and build your own flying machine. Will your plane take to the skies or crash and burn
  4. Team Up For Tyles – A classic Charity event where team’s build, decorate and perhaps even race children’s bikes before they’re donated on our client’s behalf.
  5. Mouse Trap Racer – Teams will need to figure out how to build a working car which has a mouse trap as the engine. This event will have you laughing as there is always one who tests the mouse trap with a finger.

Outdoor Team Events: Choosing Wisely

If you’re set on an outdoor event, consider locations that offer ample shade and cooling options. Parks with good tree cover, venues with misting systems, or locations near water bodies can provide relief from the heat. Remember to schedule activities during cooler parts of the day and ensure plenty of hydration breaks.

While beaches are stunning locations, they can often be too hot, and force your team to pull the plug early due to weather conditions.

In 2023 we had a number of clients who chose to do 2 day events. A little conference, dinner, far too many drinks, then the next day an outdoor team building event. While this 2 day escape sounds amazing, we would suggest doing the outdoor team building on day 1, rather than hoping people aren’t too hungover on day 2 for a team event.
The desired outcome is always fun, and being hungover while stuck in the heat isn’t too much fun.

A few great outdoor events to consider would be:

  1. Cardboard Sailor – Building boats out of cardboard before taking them to the open waters. Fun, cool, and a perfect excuse to get wet
  2. Rocket Man – Building Water powered rockets are a blast of time. Whomever is launch master always ends up soaking wet
  3. Raw Survivor – Take on the classic mud course mixed with survivor challenges. Always the chance to cool off in the mud to escape the heat
  4. Putt-Putt Canned Drive – Another great charity event, where team’s use Canned Food items and other craft items to build a mini-putt-putt course before playing a round and donating all the goods to those in need
  5. Master Of Puppets – Supplied with cardboard, dowels and craft supplies, teams will build a giant Puppet before showcasing their creation for best dressed & skilled dancer.
